LOL! I think I’m talking to myself here! That’s ok though.
Back in the spring. Remember spring? I was all a flutter like I am every year. Ready to plant our garden. We usually just plant the basics. Tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini, and maybe a squash or two. This year I put in some Ky.pole beans. Yummy green beans! Don’t know why I didn’t plant any before now!
I grew up on a small farm. My dad planted everything. Corn, squash, green beans, tobacco, strawberries. Just about everything. We sold the tobacco and the strawberries, used the money to help get my brother and I into college. Mom canned and froze the rest of the veggies. We also had a few cattle so always had a side of beef in the freezer. Sigh.. those were the days!
I hated the planting, weeding and harvesting…then. Now I love it! At least the planting and harvesting part. I never did grow to enjoy the weeding and upkeep! LOL
This year our garden just STUNK. I mean it really, really did terrible. Tomatoes look awful, green peppers died on the plant. The beans? Well they didn’t do too bad. I got enough to make a big ol’ crock pot full. Made green beans with cottage ham..yummy! Now hopefully will get enough to at least keep us in beans partially through the winter. Who knows? I do know that NEXT spring I’m gonna get some manure and spread down. sigh..who’d have ever thought I’d have to purchase manure? LOL! Wonder what the laws in my neighborhood are about keeping a milk cow or two in the backyard?
Every year, I tell Nate I want some sort of vegetable garden and every year, life gets in the way and we don’t have one and then I pay a fortune for tomatoes and onions and peppers, etc., while my friends have bazillions of them in their back yard. I’m never going to learn!
I can relate to this. I grew up with gardens and now would love to have one but the soil here is just too sandy. Somehow container gardens just don’t seem that appealing for veggies. Anyhoo, what is cottage ham? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it. Love your work, too. You’re a talented lady.
